Ironically, a former Wolves player could put their chances of retaining Conor Coady at risk with Sheffield United circling.

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo was unequivocal when asked about the prospect of Conor Coady leaving Molineux this summer.

“Conor is going to stay with us,” he said on Friday, as reported by the Express and Star. “(It’s) finished.”

However, you wonder whether his confidence was misplaced. The versatile former Liverpool youngster, who has worn the captain’s armband for Wolves this season, has just a year remaining on his contract and has attracted rather aggressive interest from Sheffield United.

The newly promoted Blades had an opening bid rejected by Wolves for Coady but the Sheffield Star reports that they are confident of getting a deal done before the transfer deadline at the end of this month.

And it appears that an injury suffered by the last defender to swap Wolves for United has encouraged Chris Wilder’s side to step up their pursuit of his former team-mate.

Richard Stearman, who joined on a three year deal from Molineux in June, suffered a hamstring injury in United’s 2-0 defeat to Cardiff City on Tuesday night and, as a result, Wilder expressed his desire to land a number of the club’s top targets, the Sheffield Star adds.

Therefore, Wolves face a challenge hanging onto Coady with just two weeks of the transfer window remaining.

Despite a number of exciting signings arriving at Molineux in recent months, Coady, who enjoyed a fine loan spell at United from Liverpool in 2013/14, offers much-needed experience and versatility in an increasingly cosmopolitan squad.
