Liverpool have suffered a major injury blow as fears are rising that Jordan Henderson could be out for longer than six weeks, the Athletic report.

Henderson went down with a groin injury in the Merseyside derby at the weekend, and had to be taken off.

The £20 million Liverpool captain (BBC Sport) actually tried to run off the problem, but there was no chance that he could stay on the pitch.

Henderson’s injury is yet to be fully assessed, but Liverpool staff are now fearing the worst.

Initial reports claimed that the Reds leader could be out for just over a month, but this is now described as the ‘best case scenario’.

Liverpool’s staff actually fear that Henderson may be sidelined for even longer, in what looks another crushing blow for the club.

Liverpool have slipped away from the top four places after suffering injuries to so many key players this term.

And Henderson’s lengthy absence means that Jurgen Klopp’s options have now become even more limited.

Henderson has been playing at centre-back for Liverpool recently, but Klopp will have to rethink his backline again, following the latest news.

Liverpool could well be relying on the likes of Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies to have to play regularly until the end of the campaign now, which will be a concern.

Liverpool could ill afford to lose any more experienced players, given their problems of late.

But the Reds’ will have to cope without Henderson now, which makes their task of turning their poor form around even more difficult.
