Birmingham City have reportedly made a move for Eupen’s Henry Onyekuru.

According to the Daily Mail, Birmingham City have made a late bid of £7.5million for Eupen star Henry Onyekuru, in an attempt to beat West Ham United to his signature.

Onyekuru, 20, joined Eupen from the Aspire Academy in 2015, and after helping Eupen to promotion in 2016, he has exploded in the Jupiler Pro League over the past season.

The Nigerian attacker – who can play up front or out wide – smashed 24 goals in all competitions last season, whilst also adding nine assists too in what was a stunning campaign.

Given that he plays for a mid-table club in Belgium, Onyekuru has been attracting major interest from clubs who believe he could be a major bargain during this summer’s transfer window.

The Daily Mail now report that whilst West Ham United are attempting to push through a deal to sign Onyekuru, Championship side Birmingham City have made a shock late bid of £7.5million.

Manager Harry Redknapp – formerly of West Ham – is attempting to boost his Birmingham squad having only avoided relegation to League One on the final day of the Championship season last month, with Onyekuru now emerging as a top target.

Ultimately, it it hugely unlikely that Onyekuru would accept a move to the Championship, but it’s a bold attempt from Birmingham, and a sign that Redknapp will have considerable funds to spend this summer.

West Ham will still be confident of tying up the deal, but whilst Onyekuru is allegedly keen to join Slaven Bilic’s men, the deal hasn’t been done yet – and that has allowed Birmingham to at least mount an attempt to sign him.

Do you think Birmingham can realistically challenge for Onyekuru?
