It will cost Real Madrid £42.5million in compensation if they want to buy Mauricio Pochettino out of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur, reports the Times.

Pochettino has jumped to the top of the shortlist to be the next manager at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu following Zinedine Zidane’s shock announcement he was leaving on Thursday (May 31).

The Argentine has long been on Madrid’s radar and with them having to find a new man in the dugout sooner than expected after Zidane’s decision, could be approached ahead of schedule.

However, Pochettino only signed a new five-year deal worth around £8.5m a year with Spurs last week. This does not contain a release clause or any gentleman’s agreement that the 46-year-old could enter talks with Los Blancos should they make an approach.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is known to drive a hard bargain and it therefore means that should the Spanish giants want to land Pochettino, they will have to buy him out of that new contract entirely.

While this would be hugely expensive for a manager, it is not beyond the realms of possibility for Real. To put it into context, it is less than half of the £85.3m (BBC) they paid Spurs for Gareth Bale five years ago.
