According to a report from the Sun, Real Madrid are plotting a £40 million swoop for Tottenham star Christian Eriksen in January, as they look for a long-term replacement for Luka Modric.

The 26-year-old joined Spurs from Ajax in the summer of 2013, for a fee believed to be worth somewhere in the region of £12.5 million, and he has gone on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s finest play-makers.

Eriksen has racked up an impressive 57 goals and 73 assists in 239 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, and he is undoubtedly one of the continent’s best creative attacking midfielders.

The Denmark international is one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most important players, so the Argentine will obviously want to keep hold of him, but with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2020, that might be easier said than done.

The Sun claims that Madrid are preparing to test Tottenham’s resolve in January, with a £40 million bid for Eriksen.

Whether that will be enough to tempt Spurs into selling, though, remains to be seen.
