Leeds United’s reported quest to sign Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez has become more difficult now, according to a report in Marca.
Deportes Cuatro reported in February that Leeds want to sign Vazquez on a free transfer this summer when the 29-year-old’s current contract at Madrid runs out.
The Daily Mail reported in the first week of January 2021 that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were considering making a bid for the Spain international that month.
Marca has now reported that Madrid want Vazquez, who can also operate as a left-back, to stay at the club and have presented him ‘with a new offer that is much improved on the one put to him before his season-ending injury’.
Blow for Leeds United?
Vasquez has been at Madrid his entire professional club football career so far and is rated very highly by head coach Zinedine Zidane.
Zidane described the 29-year-old Spain international winger as “an important player” in November 2020, as quoted in Get Spanish Football News.
It seems that Madrid are keen on keeping Vasquez at the club, and it is likely that the two parties will eventually comes to an agreement soon.
Madrid could win the La Liga and the Champions League this season, while Leeds are unlikely to challenge for the European places in the Premier League table next season.
