Glasgow Rangers are considering whether to bolster their ranks in the middle of the park.

A report in The Scottish Sun has claimed that Rangers are considering a move for former West Ham United midfielder Diego Poyet as they prepare to bring an end to the Joey Barton saga.

The Scottish Sun reports that the Gers have agreed a deal with Barton that will bring an end to his time at Ibrox, and it appears that Mark Warburton is already considering possible replacements for the controversial 34-year-old.

The name that appears to be at the top of their list currently is Poyet. The Scottish Sun adds that the 21-year-old has been attracting Derby County’s attention lately and had been close to agreeing a switch to the iPro Stadium, but has subsequently stalled after hearing of the interest coming from the Scottish Premiership giants.

Poyet is currently a free agent after leaving the Hammers in the summer following a largely unsuccessful two-year spell at Upton Park, during which time he only made three Premier League appearances.

The majority of his time was spent out on loan with various Championship sides, but he clearly did enough to put himself on the international radar as he earned his way into Uruguay’s under-20 side after switching allegiances from England.

Although Light Blues supporters will be somewhat cautious about any new signings, regardless of price, following the fortunes of Barton and Niko Kranjcar since their respective arrivals, Poyet’s talent suggests that he could prove to be a great addition to Warburton’s squad.

He would arrive with something to prove with some perhaps beginning to question whether he will still realise the obvious potential he has, and that desire to impress may bring the very best out of the talented midfielder.
