Rangers are interested in signing Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin on a free transfer when the Scotland international’s contract expires on July 1, according to the Echo.
Steven Gerrard might have arguably the finest shot-stopper in the country at his disposal but Allan McGregor, at the age of 38, cannot be expected to defy Father Time forever.
McLaughlin, 32 years of age, looks like a relative wonderkid compared to McGregor.
And the opportunity to sign a goalkeeper with experience, quality and a proven track record in the Scottish Premiership is not to be missed.
As the Echo points out, Sunderland are still hoping to keep the former Hearts and Burton Albion ace for another year or two.
But with the Black Cats consigned to yet another season in League One, McLaughlin now has better offers on the table.
Blackburn Rovers will offer him a return to the Championship but the chance to bring the glory days back to Ibrox, while plying his trade in Europe for the very first time, is an opportunity that might never come around again.
Though what role McLaughlin would play at Rangers is up for debate.
McGregor was almost faultless throughout the 2019/20 campaign and there is no reason to believe that the veteran cannot roll back the years again next time out.
So could McLaughlin take Wes Foderingham’s place on the Ibrox bench? Maybe he would be better off at Blackburn, where regular first-team football would be far more likely.
