The Sunday Post report that Rangers have identified Colombian striker Frank Castaneda as a possible replacement for Alfredo Morelos. Reports suggest Newcastle have made Morelos an ‘urgent target’ this month.
Morelos, 25, has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and Newcastle. With Eddie Howe in charge and the club now the richest in the world, CBS Sports say Morelos is a £20million priority for the Toon.
With a move to Tyneside possible, Rangers are drawing up possible replacements and his fellow countryman Castaneda is a target. He is a free agent, after leaving Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol on January 1.
That is, despite the Colombian hotshot captaining his side in the Champions League – even during the shock 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. He has produced 68 goal involvements in 73 games for Sheriff.
Castaneda to Rangers: Striker would be a stunning signing
His 42 goals and 26 assists in those 73 games makes him a potentially stunning signing on a free. While it remains to be seen if Morelos will go, bringing Castaneda – on paper – would be an incredibly astute replacement.
But given he is available on a free, it is little surprise that Rangers are not the only side after him. The Post claim Empoli, Salernitana, Sochi and Augsburg are options for Castaneda – other than Rangers.
However, the form of a fellow Colombian at Rangers in Morelos is surely going to be tempting for Castaneda – that, and the possibility of Champions League football next season. A superb addition, if it happens.
