According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers defender Leon Balogun has now earned a new deal to stay at Ibrox.

It’s claimed that Balogun needed to start 23 games for Rangers this season in order to trigger a one-year extension with the club.

Balogun has now hit that mark and will be staying for next term, with Steven Gerrard ‘more than happy’ with this agreement.

The 32-year-old will now stay until the summer of 2022, providing Gerrard with quality depth at both centre back and right back.

The deal will allegedly be confirmed later this week, when Balogun will be back at Ibrox having been away with Nigeria on international duty.

Gerrard is clearly a big fan of Balogun, praising him as a ‘warrior’ earlier this season as well as calling him ‘outstanding’ after starring against Aberdeen.

Balogun’s experience is vital, and he is likely to be one of five first-team centre backs Gerrard can pick from heading into next season, joining Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Jack Simpson and the returning Nikola Katic.

It may not be the flashiest move ever, but Balogun deserves another year at Ibrox and still has plenty to offer for next term.
