According to the Daily Record, there is a mystery candidate in the running to become Rangers’ new Director of Football – and Paul Mitchell has refused to comment on the role.

Rangers are set to appoint Portuguese manager Pedro Caixinha as their new manager in the coming days, landing him as a replacement for Mark Warburton, who left the club last month.

Whilst Caixinha’s arrival at Ibrox is imminent, Rangers are also looking to bring in a Director of Football to replace departed recruitment chief Frank McParland – though that pursuit has hit a stumbling block.

The Daily Record report that, with Southampton’s Director of Scouting Ross Wilson rejecting the chance to take the Director of Football job at Ibrox, Rangers are now weighing up their options.

It’s claimed that a mystery candidate is being targeted by Rangers are they look for an alternative to Wilson, and with no name given, Gers fans are left wondering just who will be arriving to take the job.

Another name linked with Rangers is Paul Mitchell, who was placed on gardening leave by Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, and is able to move on and join another club.

The 35-year-old followed Mauricio Pochettino from Southampton to Tottenham in 2014, but handed in his resignation last summer as he attempted to leave White Hart Lane, before being forced to see out a notice period.

Mitchell was believed to be Rangers’ top target after Wilson’s snub, but the report claims that when asked about the job, he declined to comment – meaning the mystery candidate, whoever they may be, could be strongly rivalling Mitchell for the job.
