Rangers are ramping up their efforts to sign Mexer.

According to the Daily Record, Rennes defender Mexer has been invited to Ibrox this weekend as he considers a move to join Rangers.

Mexer, 30, has starred for Rennes since joining from Nacional in 2014, playing a key role in the heart of their defence over the last five years.

A Mozambique international, Mexer has bags of experience and recently scored in their Coupe de France final success over Paris Saint-Germain – but could now be leaving Rennes.

Mexer is out of contract this summer, and L’Equipe claimed last week that Rangers boss Steven Gerrard headed over to France to talk about a move to Ibrox.

O Pais in Mozambique released a photo of the pair together on Tuesday, and the Daily Record now report that Mexer could be at Ibrox for the game against Celtic this weekend.

It’s claimed that Mexer has been invited to take in the Old Firm derby given that he’s suspended for Rennes, and agent Laurent Schmitt is considering accepting the invitation with the defender.

A source close to Mexer also offered some comments, admitting that Gerrard travelling to France to meet the defender was impressive, showing just how much he wants him at Ibrox.

However, no deal has been done yet and he has other interest from Bordeaux and Nantes, meaning this potential trip to Ibrox this weekend is hugely important to Rangers’ hopes of a deal.

“Edson certainly has options and nothing has been finalised yet,” said the source. “But Rangers is a very attractive proposition and the fact Steven Gerrard travelled to Brittany showed how far he was willing to go to make a deal happen.”
