Glasgow Rangers had been hoping to bring Kieran Dowell to Ibrox, but Steven Gerrard is reportedly about to miss out.

The Gers need to bolster their midfield options following the news that Ovie Ejaria has returned to Liverpool. And it seemed that Steven Gerrard was hoping that his potential replacement could also come from Merseyside.
However, it appears that Rangers have been dealt a blow before the window has even opened. The Sun (21/12; page 64) has reported that Dowell is ‘set to join’ Sheffield United on loan for the rest of the season.
The news is likely to disappoint Gerrard. The Daily Express reported in the summer that the Gers wanted to sign Ben Woodburn on loan from Liverpool, but he ultimately headed to Bramall Lane – and now Dowell is reportedly about to make the same decision.

Dowell could have been a fantastic signing for the Light Blues. The 21-year-old scored 10 goals on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, and he would have provided the midfield with some additional creativity.
Rangers have scored just two goals in their last five games in all competitions. So Gerrard may well have felt that Dowell was an important target with the January window looming.
