Glasgow Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha had hoped to bring Fabio Cardoso to Ibrox, but it appears that he may now be bound for Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A report in the Daily Record has suggested that Rangers could be about to miss out on centre-back Fabio Cardoso following Paul Lambert’s sacking at Championship side Wolves.

The Record reports that Pedro Caixinha is extremely keen on signing the 23-year-old, but Lambert’s departure leaves the path clear for the Molineux outfit to make a move.

Lambert’s departure from the club has now been confirmed with the Record reporting that agent Jorge Mendes’ control over transfers was a key reason behind the rift that led to the former Celtic man’s exit.

The Record adds that Mendes represents Cardoso as well as the man who is expected to take over from Lambert, Nuno Espirito Santo, meaning that Cardoso is now likely to make the switch to the Championship side instead of heading to Ibrox.

New Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha in the standsDespite looking set to miss on Cardoso, Caixinha has plenty to be pleased about from this window already

While it will be a blow for Caixinha to miss out on one of his main targets this summer, it seems unlikely that his optimism about how the current window is going will be dented too much.

The Record reports that Rangers are closing in on signing Bruno Alves and Carlos Pena, while Graham Dorrans and Ryan Jack are also moving closer to Ibrox moves, so missing out on Cardoso could arguably be viewed as a setback that Caixinha has plenty of time to bounce back from if he does indeed join Wolves.
