According to the Daily Mail, Rangers winger Barrie McKay has rejected a new contract and a pay rise to stay at Ibrox – and talks have been shelved until the summer.

McKay, 22, came up through the ranks with Kilmarnock before joining Rangers in 2011, and he featured prominently in the club’s first season after being demoted to the fourth tier.

After loan spells with Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers, many thought McKay’s Rangers career was hitting a dead end – but the appointment of Mark Warburton turned his career around.

McKay hit nine goals in 48 games under Warburton last season, becoming one of Rangers’ key players as they won promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

This term has been much more difficult for McKay, scoring just four goals in all competitions – but that hasn’t stopped Rangers from offering him a new contract, with the Daily Mail claiming that McKay has rejected a two-year extension and a pay rise.

It’s stated that McKay has snubbed Rangers’ offer, with his current deal ending in the summer of 2018, meaning that foreign clubs can open talks with him over a pre-contract agreement in January.

In January, the Daily Record reported that German side RB Leipzig – who already have on Scottish winger in the ranks in Oliver Burke – were interested in a deal for McKay, with a huge £6million fee suggested.

Rangers will allegedly return with a new offer to McKay this summer in the hope of finally tempting him into extending his stay at Ibrox, but his initial snub has thrown his future into doubt.
