Glasgow Rangers are reportedly set to make most of the money that they spent on Carlos Pena back as he nears the Ibrox exit.

According to a report from the Daily Record, Rangers look set to make most of the money that they spent on Carlos Pena back as he closes in on a move away from Ibrox.

Pena was in the stands for Cruz Azul’s clash at the weekend, and the Record reports that he is set to link up with former Gers boss Pedro Caixinha once again.

Carlos Pena of Rangers is challenged by Scott Brown of Celtic during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Record suggests that the Mexican is set to move on an initial loan deal which will see Cruz Azul pay all of his £20,000 a week wages until the end of the season when the club will have the chance to sign the 27-year-old permanently for £2 million.

Given Pena’s difficult and inconsistent time in the Scottish Premiership, it would be no surprise if many Rangers fans felt that their former boss Caixinha was doing them a favour as the deal seems to work out very well for the Gers.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

On his day, Pena was excellent and gave more than a few glimpses of quality which suggested that he could become a hugely important player for the side. However, he was also just as likely to put in an extremely poor performance where the supporters could almost forget that he was playing.

Getting him off the books permanently – should Caixinha decide to sign him in the summer – should hand Rangers’ transfer kitty a boost that may give Graeme Murty a better chance of making some of the changes that he hopes to make in the coming months, so it certainly appears to be the option that suits all parties the most.
