The former Rangers striker is set to deliver a boost to Steven Gerrard’s side, despite having left Ibrox a year ago.
Rangers are set to receive a surprise windfall with Middlesbrough closing in on a deal to sign the former Ibrox forward Martyn Waghorn, ahead of Derby County and Sheffield United, according to the Sun.
The newspaper reports that Rangers stand to bank around 10 per cent of Waghorn’s £7 million transfer fee, due to a clause inserted into the £200,000 deal that took him to Ipswich Town a year ago.
And that should come as a welcome boost to Steven Gerrard’s side, who terminated the contract of last summer’s £1.3 million signing Fabio Cardoso on Monday.
Middlesbrough’s move for Waghorn is said to be fuelled by the imminent transfer of Patrick Bamford to Leeds United, who turned to the Boro striker after failing to agree personal terms with Derby’s Matej Vydra.
And Waghorn’s transfer fee is rumoured to be worth a similar amount to that of Bamford, who spent 18 months on loan to Derby before he arrived at Middlesbrough.
Where Derby and Sheffield United will turn in search of alternatives to the 28-year-old remains to be seen, although any Rams pursuit is likely to hinge on Vydra’s sale.
Rangers, meanwhile, are being strongly linked with a move for another ex-Ibrox striker, Kyle Lafferty.
