Glasgow Rangers youngster Ross McCrorie could reportedly be about to follow his twin brother out of the Ibrox door this summer.

Ross McCrorie of Rangers is seen in action during the Scottish Cup 5th Round match between Kilmarnock and Rangers at Rugby Park on February 9, 2019 in Kilmarnock, Scotland.

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers midfielder Ross McCrorie is heading out on loan for the coming campaign, with Portsmouth and Shrewsbury keen to offer the youngster a chance in League One.

After overseeing a number of arrivals already this summer, it is little surprise that Steven Gerrard has switched some of his attention towards trimming his squad. The club announced on Thursday that Robby McCrorie has joined Queen of the South on loan, and it appears that his twin brother may be heading down a similar path.

The Scottish Sun reports that the English third tier pair both want Ross on loan, and Gerrard – who is a big fan of the 21-year-old – feels that he would be better off spending a year away from Ibrox.

McCrorie will know just how beneficial a loan move to the Shrews could be for his career. Gers teammate Greg Docherty has seemingly returned to Scotland with a new level of confidence after a superb spell with the club last season.

Meanwhile, Pompey reached the play-off semi-final last term and will be amongst the favourites for promotion once again this time around, so McCrorie may benefit from working under the pressure at Fratton Park.

There is likely to be plenty of disappointment amongst the Rangers fans that McCrorie appears to be heading for a temporary exit. He enjoyed limited game-time under Gerrard, but has so much potential and rarely lets the team down when he does play.

It should certainly benefit his long-term future to get a full season of first-team football under his belt. But with Rangers looking to make an impact in four competitions, there may well be times over the next 12 months where Gerrard will wonder whether he has made the right decision to let him go.
