Rangers are reportedly poised to appoint Jonatan Johansson to Pedro Caixinha’s coaching staff.
Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha
According to the Daily Record, Rangers are set to appoint former striker Jonatan Johansson as a coach alongside new manager Pedro Caixinha.
The Gers landed Caixinha as their new manager last month following Mark Warburton’s departure in February, and he has so far taken charge of four games.
With two wins and two draws to his name following today’s 3-0 thumping of Aberdeen, Caixinha has made a solid if unspectacular start to life at Ibrox, and whilst he has brought coaches Helder Baptista, Pedro Malta and Jose Belman to Glasgow with him, he has still been searching for another coach.
Caixinhas has been targeting a ‘local’ coach with a knowledge of Scottish football and, ideally, a man with history of playing for Rangers – and his targets so far have shown that.
Barry Ferguson, John Brown, Peter Lovenkrands, Alex Rae and Kevin Thomson have all been interviewed for the position, but the Daily Record claim that Jonatan Johansson is the man who has landed the job.
Jonatan Johansson celebrates scoring for Rangers
Johansson, 41, joined Rangers from FC Flora back in 1997, and spent three years with the club, scoring 25 goals in 71 games for the Gers before moving on to Charlton Athletic and Norwich City among others.
The former Finland international has had just two coaching roles in his career, taking charge of the Greenock Morton reserves in 2012 before a three-year stint with the Motherwell Under-20’s.
Now, Johansson will work alongside Caixinha at Rangers, offering advice on Scottish football and helping the Portuguese boss settle into life at Ibrox.
