According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are planning to begin talks with David Bates imminently regarding a new contract at Ibrox as his current deal runs into its final six months.

Bates has been on Rangers’ books since the summer of 2016, initially joining on loan before his move was made permanent one year ago. And during that time, he has shown glimpses of his potential at centre-back.

A general view of Ibrox Stadium is seen ahead of the EURO 2016 Qualifier match between Scotland and Georgia at Ibrox Stadium on October 11, 2014 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Though he has struggled for game-time this season, the 21-year-old showed what he is capable of at the weekend as he came off the bench just 18 minutes into the Old Firm clash with Celtic at Parkhead and hardly put a foot wrong to help the Gers keep a clean sheet as the game ended in a goalless draw.

And The Scottish Sun is now reporting that the youngster is set to be rewarded for the promise that he has shown by being offered a new contract, with talks over the fresh terms set to begin next week.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Graeme Murty will be hoping that a fresh contract will help Bates take his game to the next level as there are clearly signs that he could prove to be an important player for the Gers in years to come, especially if his display against the Hoops is a sign of his potential.

And with Ross McCrorie recently signing a new deal along with his brother, Murty may be hoping that now handing Bates a new contract will make it clear to the youngsters hoping to come through at Ibrox that the path to the first-team is definitely there.
