Rangers are reportedly pushing to lure Mexer to Ibrox.
According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers have now offered a three-year contract to Rennes defender Mexer – but face huge competition for his signature.
Mexer, 30, has been a regular for Rennes in the last five years since arrival from Nacional, but his time with the club is coming to an end, with his contract expiring in a matter of weeks.
O Pais in Mexer’s native Mozambique had photographic evidence of Mexer meeting with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard last week, as the Gers attempt to lure him to Glasgow.
The Scottish Sun now report that Rangers have made their offer to the centre back, giving him a three-year deal to make the move to Ibrox and bolster Gerrard’s defensive options.
With Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley leaving this summer, Mexer would be an outstanding bargain addition for Rangers, but they aren’t alone in pursuing him.
It’s stated that Europa League semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt have now joined the race, with Bordeaux and Nantes battling to try and keep him in French football, meaning Rangers face a major battle for the in-demand defender.
Rangers fans would love to see Mexer arrive, but ex-Dundee boss Simon Stainrod – currently an agent over in French football – has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Mexer would be taking a major step down by joining Rangers.
Stainroid thinks Rennes are much better than Rangers right now, and whilst he doesn’t think Mexer has the physicality to play in England, he’s backing him to be a greater success at Ibrox than Lassana Coulibaly if he does make the move.
“He doesn’t particularly stand out, but he’s a very solid player,” said Stainrod. “He’s a tall, skinny guy, but he’s comfortable on the ball. He’s quite polished and happy enough to bring the ball out of defence and try to make passes. I think he’s maybe a bit lightweight to play in England. He’s a good footballer, but he’s not what you’d call physically imposing. But in Scotland? He’d do fine because he’s playing at a much higher level here. Let’s be honest, it would be a downward step in standard for him to play for Rangers.”
“As things stand right now, Rennes, who are going to finish in mid-table in France, would beat Rangers quite comfortably. That might not be the case in a few seasons when Steven Gerrard gets his stamp on the squad, but it is the case now. If Mexer goes to Scotland it will be interesting to see how he shapes up, but I think he will do OK and certainly better than Lassana Coulibaly, who doesn’t look as though he’s worked out,” he added.
