Rangers have a host of centre backs already, but they could now miss out on signing another.

Connor Goldson and Filip Helander are fixtures of the side, whilst Leon Balogun has earned a new deal and Jack Simpson is on board.

George Edmundson is returning from Derby County and Nikola Katic will be back from injury, so Steven Gerrard could be carrying six centre backs next season.

Still, Aftonbladet report that Rangers want to sign Elfsborg ace Joseph Okumu, especially if Helander leaves this summer amid Premier League interest.

Okumu has been likened to Virgil van Dijk by Elfsborg teammate Johan Larsson, so the 23-year-old Kenyan is a man in demand now.

It looks like Rangers are going to miss out though, as Expressen report that French side Stade de Reims have made the first move.

They’ve offered €2million (£1.75million) in the hope of landing Okumu, but Elfsborg want double that price – €4million or £3.5million.

It’s hard to see Rangers getting involved at that price until a defender leaves, and that doesn’t look like happening any time soon.

Reims have decided to make their move well in advance of the transfer window opening, and it may leave Rangers lagging behind in the race for Okumu’s signature.
