Rangers have missed out on a deal for £16 million Holland international Guus Til, with De Telegraaf reporting that the Spartak Moscow midfielder is set to join Freiburg instead on a two-year loan deal.
Perhaps Steven Gerrard sees a bit of himself in the former AZ Alkmaar captain.
Like the Liverpool legend-turned-Gers boss, Til is a midfielder who prides himself on making those perfectly timed runs into the penalty area before finishing off chances with devastating precision.
The once-capped Dutchman might have struggled to live up to expectations or that £16 million price-tag in the Russian capital, but a tally of 15 goals and seven assists during his final season in the Eredivisie explains why there are so many clubs quieting up to offer him a fresh start.
De Telegraaf reports that Rangers made contact with Til and his agent, while PSV and Feyenoord were keen to take the Zambia-born 22-year-old back to the Netherlands.
Freiburg look set to win the race through with a two-year loan deal on the table.

Til’s boundless energy and driving runs appear to make him the perfect fit for the Bundesliga’s all-action nature, though it remains to be seen whether he can step into the void created by Luca Waldschmidt’s big-money move from Freiburg to Benfica.
“Guus can become a star,” Rangers legend Dick Advocaat told Sport Express of Til last year.
“He is a versatile and intelligent player, one that you do not see much anymore in a time when there are mainly many fast and athletic players around. He has his entire future ahead of him.”
