Rangers won’t be bringing Claudio Marchisio to Ibrox.
Rangers secured three midfielders over the summer, as well as welcoming one back to Ibrox – but that didn’t stop links to Claudio Marchisio last month.
The Gers signed Steven Davis permanently, brought in Joe Aribo at the end of his Charlton Athletic contract, took Andy King on loan from Leicester City and saw Greg Docherty return from a loan at Shrewsbury Town.
That gives Steven Gerrard six strong midfielders; Davis, Aribo, King, Docherty, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara, enabling the Rangers boss to chop and change his side.
However, RMC Sport reported last month that Rangers were keen on free agent Claudio Marchisio, fighting Flamengo and Monaco for his signature.
Marchisio, 33, is a free agent having left Zenit St Petersburg at the end of last season, and having been a regular with Juventus and Italy in recent memory, a number of clubs were keen.
The veteran is set to make an announcement about his future, which left many wondering who he’s signing for, but it turns out he isn’t going to be playing again.
Gazzetta Dello Sport – who back up Gerrard’s interest – report that Marchisio will announce his retirement today, in a press conference being held at Juventus’s stadium having spent 25 years with the club.
Marchisio’s decision is something of a shock, hanging up his boots despite major interest in his signature, and is retiring a little early – but with interests outside of the game, he’s decided to call it quits and rule out a move to Ibrox.
