The Rangers target appears to be edging closer to a move to Ibrox.
A manager who was recently linked with the vacant Rangers position could replace Derek McInnes if the Aberdeen boss moves to Ibrox.
The Scottish Sun reports that Aberdeen chiefs have been impressed with the exploits of Michael O’Neill – who played six times for the Dons on loan in his playing days – as Northern Ireland’s manager.
O’Neill has found himself in high demand since his country’s failure to make the World Cup, with Rangers [Telegraph], Sunderland and Scotland [both Scottish Sun] credited with interest in the 48-year-old.
However, he is already thought to have turned down an approach from Sunderland, just as McInnes did ahead of the campaign.
STV reports that McInnes and his assistant Tony Docherty failed to take training at Aberdeen on Wednesday morning following an official approach from Rangers, which was blocked by the Dons the previous day.
And it is looking increasingly likely that the 46-year-old – who wants talks with Rangers and could resign from his post, according to the Daily Record – will take the reins at Ibrox.
Aberdeen may have to move fast if they want to appoint O’Neill, though, with the Scottish Sun reporting that Scotland are set to step up their search for a new boss.
