Glasgow Rangers are said to be keeping a close eye on the young Manchester United midfielder.

According to a report from ESPN, Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha wants to bring Manchester United under-23 player Matty Willock to Ibrox this summer.

The 20-year-old has featured 42 times for United’s second string, scoring five goals and providing three assists in the process.

He is clearly rated by United manager Jose Mourinho, who picked him for the match-day squads against West Bromwich Albion and Crystal Palace last season, but unlike Angel Gomes and Scott McTominay, Willock did not make it onto the field.

With a number of new players expected to arrive at Old Trafford this summer, Willock’s path to the first-team is not going to get any easier to navigate, and a move to Rangers could be the perfect short-term solution, giving him the first-team football he craves.

It is not explained if the ESPN sources have cited a permanent deal or a loan move to Scotland, but the latter seems more likely at this stage of Willock’s career.

Rangers have already signed plenty of new players this summer, yet their embarrassing Europa League exit showed just how much work Caixinha needs to do to turn his players into a coherent squad.

Bringing in Willock would throw yet another player into the mix; however Rangers would be signing a versatile youngster with the desire to prove himself, and his ability to play not just in the centre of the park but also up front, as a holding player or on the right wing marks him out as one to watch.

Rangers know they have plenty of work to do to catch Celtic and Willock’s capture would be another step in the right direction.
