Rangers are reportedly looking to bring Jake Cooper to Ibrox.
According to the Daily Mail, Rangers are eyeing up a move to bring in Millwall’s Jake Cooper as a replacement for Parma-bound defender Bruno Alves.
Just a year after landing him from Cagliari, Rangers are set to offload Alves to newly promoted Serie A side Parma, with the 36-year-old Portugal international poised for a return to Italy.
Whilst Rangers have brought in Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic to boost Steven Gerrard’s options in the heart of defence, Alves’ imminent exit means that another defender may be needed – especially with questions over Fabio Cardoso’s future.
Now, the Daily Mail report that Gerrard and co do have a replacement in mind, with a move for Millwall defender Jake Cooper allegedly on Rangers’ wish list.
Cooper, 23, came up through the ranks with Reading and starred during the 2015-16 season, but was then farmed out and eventually sold to Millwall after seemingly failing to convince Jaap Stam.
The 6ft 4in centre back, who has represented England at youth level, played 42 times for Millwall last season, hitting four goals for the Lions as he thrived under Neil Harris.
Millwall have though brought in Scottish defender Murray Wallace this summer as another left-sided centre back, and Rangers may look to test Millwall’s resolve with a bid for Cooper.
It’s claimed that a move would cost seven figures, and after spending heavily on Katic and Goldson, it remains to be seen whether Rangers are prepared to spend another considerable sum on another centre back.
