Rangers were reportedly interested in signing Steven Gerrard’s former teammate in the summer.
Turkish outlet CNN have claimed that Rangers have not given up on trying to lure Fenerbahce centre-back Martin Skrtel to Ibrox, after failing to do so in the summer.
The 33-year-old no-nonsense defender played alongside Steven Gerrard at Liverpool before leaving Anfield in the summer of 2016 to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce where he remains first choice.
Indeed, Skrtel has played 15 times this season for the Turkish outfit, but the 101-time Slovakia international and captain’s future is in doubt as his contract at the club expires at the end of the season.
Rangers were desperate to sign Skrtel in the summer, with the defender’s agent Karol Csontó confirming the interest, but he also stated that Rangers were unable to land the centre-back as the “finances were terribly far apart”.
The Gers signed four centre-backs in the summer, in Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley after allowing Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, David Bates and Russell Martin to leave the club.
It remains to be seen if Rangers can convince Skrtel to move to Scotland and reunite with Gerrard, with the obvious stumbling block being whether the Scottish outfit can afford the player’s wages.
During the summer amid speculation of a move to Ibrox, it was reported by the Daily Record that Fener wanted a huge £5million for Skrtel, but that price tag may be reduced in January with the player set to leave on a free in the summer.
