Rangers seemingly won’t be able to lure Jacob Murphy to Ibrox this summer.

That’s because The Chronicle claim that Newcastle United will be triggering the option on Murphy’s contract to keep him until 2022.

Murphy’s deal is meant to expire this summer, but Newcastle can keep him for another year by triggering that clause.

It’s claimed that Rangers have made enquiries into signing Murphy, as have a host of other clubs in the hopes of signing him.

Newcastle aren’t interested though, and Murphy’s extended time with the club is expected to be confirmed imminently.

The 26-year-old, who cost Newcastle around £12million in 2017, has notched two goals and two assists in 23 games this season.

He has carved out a role as a right-sided wing back in Steve Bruce’s side, adding another string to his bow having struggled to start as a winger.

If Rangers want Murphy, they will have to pay a fee for him this summer rather than being able to land him for free.

With Fashion Sakala now on board and able to play out wide, Murphy may not be as big of a priority for the Gers now, and certainly not if a fee is needed.
