According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers remain keen on bringing Southampton’s Steven Davis back to the club in January – and now have the green light to do it.

The Gers could only draw 1-1 with Dundee on Sunday afternoon, despite the fact that Steven Gerrard’s side faced 10 men for 70 minutes of the game.

Rangers’ inability to claim all three points once again highlighted a lack of creativity in the middle of the park, and finding a real playmaker has to be Gerrard’s priority in January.

Southampton veteran Davis has been touted as a top Gerrard target for many months now, and a move next month could now be on the cards.

The Scottish Sun report that new Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will allow Davis to leave in January, with the club prepared to let him go as a thank you for almost seven years of service.

Rangers boss Gerrard allegedly feels that Davis can solve some of his side’s problems in midfield, and he now seemingly has the green light to strike a January deal.

Davis, 33, has made more than 200 appearances for the Saints but has found first-team football hard to come by this season, with Hasenhuttl now prepared to let him go.

The Northern Ireland international could choose a return to Rangers, where he hit 22 goals in 210 games, and would become the latest ex-Gers ace to return to Ibrox under Gerrard after Allan McGregor and Kyle Lafferty.
