The Rangers defender could be on his way out of Ibrox already.

Bruno Alves of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers’ Bruno Alves could be heading back to Serie A – just eight months after his move to Ibrox from Cagliari.

Alves was brought to Rangers by previous boss Pedro Caixinha, and has 18 months to run on his contract in Glasgow.

According to Di Marzio, however, the 36 year old has emerged as a contender to replace Fabio Lucioni at Benevento, after the Italian was handed a one year doping ban earlier this week.

Alves, though, is currently sidelined with a torn calf, and is not expected back until the middle of February, which could deter the struggling outfit from making a formal approach.

It is unlikely, however, that Graeme Murty, the Rangers manager, would be averse to losing the Portugal international, having added another experienced defender to his squad this week in Russell Martin.

Russell Martin of Norwich City pulls himself from the ground during the Barclays Premier League match between Norwich City and Watford at Carrow Road on May 11, 2016 in Norwich, England.

Murty has already either offloaded or frozen out several of Caixinha’s signings, and it is plausible that Alves will follow if an approach is made this month.
