According to the Daily Mail, Rangers wanted to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Dion Sanderson before going for Leon Balogun.

The Gers opened their new season with a 1-0 win over Aberdeen, with Balogun turning in a superb display at the back.

Balogun has been snapped up on a free transfer following Nikola Katic’s injury, and Steven Gerrard will be pleased with what he’s seen from the Nigerian so far.

Rangers did though look at other options at centre back, and it’s now claimed that Sanderson was one of the players considered.

With Rangers going with Balogun instead, Sanderson is now expected to return to Cardiff City having spent the second half of the season on loan with the Bluebirds.

Sanderson, 20, is considered as a bright young prospect at Wolves, but with first-team hard to come by, he will likely go out on loan again.

He is tall at 6ft 2in tall, but his pace and ability on the ball saw him deployed at right back at Cardiff, a role which he played well.

Rangers seemingly saw him as a centre back, and it will be interesting to see whether the Gers maintain their interest down the line.
