Report: Rangers confident Gerrard will sign three-year deal at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly confident that they will get Steven Gerrard to put pen to paper on a lengthy deal at Ibrox.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Steven Gerrard’s contract at Rangers is likely to be a three-year deal with the Gers hierarchy making promises to the Liverpool legend that he will have the funds that will allow him to challenge Celtic.

The Mail reports that Gerrard is close to finalising a deal that will see him succeed Graeme Murty at the end of the campaign, though he is yet to decide once and for all that he is going to make the move to Ibrox.

Should he decide to take the plunge, the Mail suggests that it will be a three-year deal that greets Gerrard, while Dave King has reportedly assured the 37-year-old that the funds will be there that could enable the Gers to rival the Scottish Premiership champions.

The Mail adds that Alfredo Morelos is likely to be sold, while the likes of Bruno Alves, Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera will also see their spells on Rangers’ books brought to an end during the summer – selling the latter trio may perhaps be slightly easier said than done however, given the years that they have endured.

Having a name such as Gerrard at the helm will undoubtedly boost Rangers’ hopes of making whatever funds they have go further. If playing for Rangers was not enough of a lure for potential targets, the fact that they will be working with one of the finest midfielders the world has seen this side of the Millennium should also help get deals across the line.

What King and Mark Allen must realise however – and they surely will, given how last summer’s window looks on reflection – is having the funds to challenge Celtic is one thing, making sure that that money is spent on the right players is a much more difficult task. Gerrard’s expertise however should make that challenge a lot easier if they manage to get him through the door.
