According to The Express, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is a shock target for Bristol City and their owner Steve Lansdown.
The Robins sacked Lee Johnson last week, and they’re now hunting for a new boss with their playoff hopes not yet actually over.
Billionaire owner Lansdown is putting together a list of candidates, and it’s believed that he thinks Gerrard is the man to take Bristol City to the Premier League next season.
Lansdown seemingly rates Gerrard very highly, and with a promising squad and huge financial backing, the Robins hope to lure the Rangers boss in a shock move.
Chris Hughton, Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer and Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe are believed to be wanted too, but Gerrard is the top target.
It ultimately seems unlikely that Gerrard would make this move. It was only in December that Gerrard signed a new contract with Rangers until 2024 – the same year Jurgen Klopp is scheduled to leave Liverpool.
Gerrard is backed to become Liverpool boss one day, and a move into the Championship right now – when he’s challenging for the title with Celtic and managing in Europe – doesn’t seem like a move to take him closer to Anfield.
Lansdown would have to throw a lot of money at Gerrard to tempt him into the move, but even that might not be enough after two promising years at Rangers.
