Glasgow Rangers want to bring George Edmundson to Ibrox, but face a lot of competition for his signature.

Rangers have joined a host of clubs in the race to sign highly-rated Oldham centre-back George Edmundson this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.
Steven Gerrard will know that he needs to look at his centre-back options this summer. Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic have been superb in recent weeks, but Joe Worrall’s loan is almost over and it would be a surprise if Gareth McAuley was still at Ibrox next season.
The Mail reports that Edmundson is on Rangers’ radar heading into the summer, with the Latics prepared to sell their ‘prized asset’ for around £450,000.
However, Rangers do not have a clear run to his signature. The Mail adds that Sunderland also want the 21-year-old, while Championship pair Stoke City and Hull City are keen, and Joey Barton’s Fleetwood Town are also admirers. The Sun on Sunday (12/5; page 59) claimed at the weekend that Preston North End are interested.

Edmundson has a lot of first-team experience under his belt given his age. He has played 91 times for Oldham and across various loans in all competitions, including making 45 appearances in League Two this past season.
It may be encouraging for Rangers fans to see the club look to exciting young players ahead of what promises to be a crucial window. The likes of Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis have proved to be outstanding signings for the Light Blues, but they need to keep one eye on the long-term picture.
And while signing Edmundson may look like a risk, his £450,000 asking price certainly leaves the window open for Rangers to pull off an inspired deal if Gerrard helps him realise his potential.
