Rangers are set to miss out on a player that Steven Gerrard had hoped to bring to Ibrox for free this summer – along with English sides West Ham United and Derby County – according to The Daily Mail.
The newspaper reports that Dion McGhee is closing in on a move to Portugal, despite interest from clubs across the continent as well as Rangers, West Ham and Derby.
McGhee, a left-footed attack-minded midfielder, was released by Manchester United at the end of last month having spent 13 of his 19 years on the Red Devils’ books.
According to The Daily Mail, Benfica and Porto are now leading the chase for the former United Under-23-team player, who can follow in the footsteps of fellow young Brits Marcus Edwards and Easah Suliman by reviving his career in Portugal.
McGhee will, however, hope to avoid the plight suffered by another pair of UK exports, Chris Willock and Ryan Gauld – an alleged former Rangers target.

Should the Oldham-born talent complete a move elsewhere, it could mean a return to the drawing board for Rangers, West Ham, Derby and others.
Would Rangers, West Ham and Derby rue missing out on McGhee?
