Chelsea have paid Rangers an extra £1m in line with Billy Gilmour’s rise to prominence as part of the 2017 transfer that took him to Stamford Bridge, according to The Scottish Sun.
Gilmour departed Ibrox soon after his 16th birthday for an initial £500,000 but with the guarantee of future payouts. Chelsea also agreed to include a sell-on clause after the Glasgow giants insisted on it to sanction any deal.
Rangers’ decision is now set to boost Steven Gerrard’s summers transfer plans as Gilmour’s Chelsea rise has returned a £1m. The Blues have paid a seven-figure sum in line with the midfielder gaining a more prominent role and breaking onto the international scene.

Steve Clarke awarded Gilmour his Scotland debut in a friendly with the Netherlands and first start against England in the group stage of Euro 2020. The 20-year-old stood out at Wembley and would have likely started against Croatia had he not tested positive for Covid.
Gilmour has carried out 10-days in self-isolation and will have a medical at Norwich on Thursday, per Sky Sports. The move will see the midfielder gain more regular Premier League minutes, after Chelsea overlooked interest from Rangers and Newcastle.
Gerrard had asked Rangers to sign Gilmour with Chelsea open to sending him out on loan, per the Daily Record. The Gers product only made 11 senior appearances last season, with five coming in the Premier League. He also made three of his outings in the last five games.
Chelsea boost Gerrard’s plans with Rangers’ clause for Gilmour
Chelsea dented Gerrard’s plans by denying Gilmour a return to Ibrox, but the cash injection from Rangers’ 2017 decision will be a major boost. The additional funds will now help the Gers to strengthen in the summer transfer window ahead of defending their title.
Celtic will want to respond strongly to the Gers’ Premiership win after their problems last season. And Gerrard will need new faces to strengthen the Ibrox ranks, hence wanting Rangers to loan Gilmour from Chelsea.
Rangers will likely need their windfall for alternatives, too, after Chelsea decided Gilmour would not be an option for Gerrard.
