Matz Sels was brought to Newcastle United from Gent in the summer transfer window.
According to a report in the Northern Echo, Rafael Benitez will stick by Matz Sels, despite his poor start at Newcastle United.
Sels has looked shaky in his first few appearances in English football, and he was partly at fault for the late equaliser which Newcastle conceded against Aston Villa in their latest fixture.
The Belgian stopper tried to claim a corner, but misjudged the cross and allowed Aaron Tshibola to head home.
Sels came under fire after the match on social media site Twitter from Newcastle fans, and later deleted his account due to the criticism he was receiving.
Benitez, though, feels that Sels will come good and reportedly will continue to pick him as Newcastle’s first choice in between the sticks.
The Spanish boss does intend to keep a close eye on the former Gent man in training, however, to ensure that his mentality is correct.
Benitez wants to ensure that Sels confidence has not been damaged, due to the pressure he is now under.
If Benitez does want to change Newcastle’s goalkeeper, he could turn to Karl Darlow to replace Sels.
