Rafael Benitez will walk away from Newcastle United at the end of the season as things stand, according to The Shields Gazette.
The Spaniard is out of contract at St James’s Park this summer.
Newcastle owner Mike Ashley broke the club’s transfer record on bringing Miguel Almiron in for £20 million last month [The Sun].
But, according to The Shields Gazette, there’s still a number of issues which Benitez wants resolved before he commits his future to the Tyneside club.
The report claims that the ‘convoluted way’ in which deals are done continues to irk Benitez, who missed out on a number of January transfers.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid coach also wants Ashley to invest in new training facilities and the club’s youth system, having seen the value of what local lads like Paul Dummett and Sean Longstaff can bring to the table.
But the Gazette adds that Ashley is ‘unwavering’ in this respect and does not believe that it’s a priority as far as expenditure goes.
Benitez joined Newcastle in 2016 and worked wonders to steer the Magpies away from relegation last season, though it seems another fight against demotion is on the cards this time around.
His team are one point and two places above the bottom three.
