Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez reportedly went into the season with doubts over Karl Darlow’s ability.

According to a report in the Chronicle, Rafael Benitez had doubts about Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow at the start of the season.

Benitez felt that Darlow lacked the authority required to command his penalty area.

As a result, the former Nottingham Forest stopper was used as a reserve option in the first few weeks of the season.

Matz Sels began the campaign as Newcastle’s number one, but after a series of error prone displays he was dropped.

And since Darlow has gone on to earn the trust of Benitez, by putting in some excellent performances.

The 26-year-old has been reliable, as Newcastle have pushed for the Championship title.

Darlow has kept 12 clean sheets in 29 Championship appearances so far this season for the Magpies.

Darlow now looks set to continue as Newcastle’s number one for the rest of the campaign, with just eight games remaining.

Benitez’s side currently sit at the top of the Championship table, and are next in action in two weekends’ time with a match against struggling Wigan Athletic.
