Report: Rafa Benitez to get green light to spend after Newcastle takeover talks collapses

It appears that Newcastle United fans may soon be able to start celebrating some new signings.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Mike Ashley is now set to give Rafa Benitez the green light to look to strengthen the Newcastle squad after talks surrounding a possible takeover at St James’ Park collapsed.

There has been a huge amount of speculation surrounding Ashley’s future lately, with Amanda Staveley thought to be leading a consortium interested in bringing an end to the 53-year-old’s tenure.

However, the Telegraph reports that sources have suggested that Staveley never made a serious bid for the Premier League club and Ashley no longer feels that she is a credible buyer of the club, thus the apparent end to the talks between the two parties.

Given the way that Ashley is viewed amongst a large group of the Newcastle supporters, the news that he seemingly looks set to stay for the time-being may appear to be hugely disappointing. However, the Telegraph suggests that the temporary clarity does have one significant upside for Benitez.

According to the Telegraph, Ashley is now ready to back Benitez in the transfer market as the Spaniard looks to make the additions to his squad that he hopes will boost Newcastle’s chances of staying up this season.

The Magpies are yet to make their first signing of this window and given that they are just three points above the relegation zone, Benitez would have been forgiven for fearing what letting the deadline come and go without strengthening may mean for the club’s hopes of staying up.

But perhaps the fresh uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of Newcastle will now hand the club a boost in the short-term – if Ashley is indeed willing to spend on the squad.
