A report in the Shields Gazette has suggested that Rafa Benitez is hoping that Newcastle manage to make a breakthrough in their pursuit of new signings before the squad return for pre-season on Monday as Mike Ashley begins to put pressure on Lee Charnley.
Newcastle are preparing for their Premier League return this summer, but have so far, only concluded one deal with former loanee Christian Atsu returning to St James’ Park on a permanent basis.

The Shields Gazette reports that the lack of progress has left Benitez extremely frustrated, while the Daily Mail suggested at the weekend that the lack of deals may even leave the Spaniard’s future in doubt.
Perhaps sensing that the manager could feel forced to consider his future if the situation does not change, the Shields Gazette reports that Ashley has begun to start pushing Charnley to get some deals done, and is adamant that he still plans to back his manager with funds.
The Shields Gazette adds that Benitez is now hopeful that a breakthrough will come before the squad returns to training following the summer break.
Newcastle fans will be hoping that the latest developments become the catalyst for the club to get fully stuck into the transfer window.
Their performance in the Championship this past season certainly suggested that they have a very good squad, but given the boost that new signings will provide, it is not surprising that Benitez now wants to see some success in the market.
