According to The Sun, Leeds United want to land Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui as Marcelo Bielsa’s long-term successor at Elland Road.
The Whites were superb once again on Saturday evening, beating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park thanks to Raphinha’s brilliant drive.
Bielsa’s side continue to excite and entertain, showing no sign of changing their playing style in the Premier League – but Leeds may need to think about what comes next.
Bielsa is 65, and there may be concerns that he could move on in the not-too-distant future, whether that’s for retirement or a final project elsewhere.
It’s now claimed that Leeds fancy Sevilla boss Lopetegui, as owner Andrea Radrizzani is a big fan of the Spaniard.
Lopetegui guided Sevilla to yet another Europa League title last season, rebuilding his reputation with the La Liga side after a difficult spell.
The 54-year-old lost just nine games as Porto boss and then went unbeaten in 20 games in charge of Spain, but was acrimoniously axed just days before Spain’s 2018 World Cup campaign began having agreed a move to Real Madrid.
Lopetegui’s time in charge there didn’t last long, winning just six of his 14 games before being sacked less than four months into the job.
Lopetegui’s Sevilla have been superb though, seemingly attracting Leeds’ interest given that he allegedly wants to manage in the Premier League in the future.
His contract expires in 2022, and that may line up well for Leeds, as Bielsa seems unlikely to move on in the immediate future – but it’s good for Leeds to have a potential replacement in mind, just in case the Argentinian does call it a day.
