According to West London Sport, QPR have made Ingolstadt winger Mathew Leckie a prime target as they look to replace Matt Phillips.
The R’s have already snapped up the likes of Jake Bidwell, Joel Lynch and Ariel Borysiuk, but manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink now has to try and find another winger after Phillips’ departure today.
Scotland international winger Phillips completed a move to Premier League side West Brom earlier today, leaving a huge gap in the QPR side having hit eight goals and five assists last season.
With Phillips gone and Junior Hoilett’s contract expired, Hasselbaink desperately needs a winger with pace – and he appears to have turned his attention to a Bundesliga ace.
West London Sport report that QPR want to sign Ingolstadt star Mathew Leckie as Phillips’ replacement, and could make their move as a deal for Metz’s Yeni Ngbakoto has gone cold.
Leckie, 25, has spent the last five years in Germany having left Adelaide United for Borussia Monchengladbach in 2011, and spells with FSV Frankfurt and now Ingolstadt have followed.
Leckie was a key player for Ingolstadt in their first Bundesliga campaign last season, scoring three goals in 28 starts, but his performances in Germany appear to have caught QPR’s attention.
Primarily a left winger who can also play up front, Leckie has 32 Australia caps to his name and played at the 2014 World Cup, where he travelled with QPR ace and Australia team-mate Massimo Luongo.
A strong, pacey forward with top-level experience, Leckie could be something of a coup for QPR as they pursue a replacement for Phillips – and with money to spend, we could see a move from Hasselbaink in the coming days.
