Report provides update on Newcastle’s Miguel Almiron chase

Newcastle United have reportedly identified potential alternative targets to Miguel Almiron, who is at the top of Rafa Benitez’s January wishlist.

According to a report from the Chronicle, Miguel Almiron remains Newcastle’s number one target in January, but the Magpies have identified at least two Europe-based players as alternative options.

After several frustrating windows, many of the Toon Army seemed to believe that this may prove to be the month when the club’s transfer record was broken with plenty of speculation surrounding Atlanta United talisman Almiron.

The Chronicle reports that they are yet to make a bid for the attacking midfielder – who is valued in excess of £20 million – but continue discussions with the MLS side over a potential deal.

However, what may concern some Magpies fans is that the Chronicle is reporting that at least two alternative targets have been identified – and if either is brought in, it appears that Michael Owen will remain the club’s most expensive buy for the time-being.

The Chronicle suggests that one player would be signed on a loan deal from a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues, while the other would come in on a permanent deal that proves to be much cheaper than what Almiron costs.

It is difficult not to feel that the move for Almiron is a lot more significant than just getting an extremely impressive signing through the St James’ Park door.

After so much buzz about potentially breaking the club’s transfer record, Benitez will surely be deflated if he has rely on his ability to land bargain deals again.

With his contract expiring this summer (via Chronicle), he surely needs to see some ambition shown in the market before he commits to staying. Signing Almiron would prove that ambition with reports suggesting that he is the man that the Spaniard wants.
