Newcastle United will not break the bank to sign Andreas Samaris from Benfica in the summer transfer window, according to a report in The Shields Gazette on Saturday.

The Mirror claimed on Friday that Newcastle were interested in signing Samaris, who operates as a defensive midfielder.

It was reported that the Magpies were closing in on the £17.5 million signing of the 28-year-old Greece international midfielder.

The Mirror also claimed that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez has been working on the deal for six weeks, with the player himself said to be keen on a switch to England in the summer transfer window.

The Shields Gazette has now claimed that although Newcastle have considered signing Samaris, they will not pay the £17.5m that Benfica are claimed to be asking for him.

The Magpies will feature in the Premier League next season after winning automatic promotion from the Championship at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

Benitez will be hoping to guide Newcastle into the top 10 of the Premier League next season.
