According to The Sun, Preston North End are closing in on the signature of Oxford United midfielder Ryan Ledson after a lengthy pursuit.
The Lilywhites head into Sunday’s game with Burton Albion with a slim chance of breaking into the Championship play-offs on the final day of the season, in what would cap off a strong first campaign for Alex Neil.
Preston have mostly shopped for bargains since their return to the Championship in 2015, but with money in the bank following Jordan Hugill’s January move to West Ham United, funds could be available for new signings.
One of Neil’s top targets in the January transfer window was Oxford United midfielder Ryan Ledson, but the League One side stood strong and kept him at the Kassam Stadium.
Now though, The Sun report that Preston are actually closing in on a deal for Ledson, with a breakthrough struck with Karl Robinson’s men for the 20-year-old’s signature.
Ledson, who came up through the ranks at Everton and has represented England from Under-16 level all the way up to Under-20’s, has racked up more than 75 appearances for Oxford, and has bagged three goals this season.
Ledson’s move to Deepdale may cost in the region of seven figures, but will give Neil more midfield options alongside Ben Pearson and Alan Browne, especially with questions over the future of out of contract duo John Welsh and Paul Gallagher.
