The Benfica president, Luis Felipe Vieira, is counting on the sale of a rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target to fund two new signings, according to O Jogo.
Football.London claimed earlier this month that Tottenham have shown an interest in Carlos Vinicius as they seek to provide Harry Kane with greater competition up front.
Vinicius scored or made 37 goals in 47 games for Benfica last season.
But the Eagles have hired a new manager since then and that man, Jorge Jesus, is keen to bring in two of his former players, Gerson and Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo, having already invested heavily in several new attacking options, according to O Jogo.
It is claimed it will cost €35 million (around £32m) to acquire the pair, a figure it is suggested that Benfica will struggle to afford having failed to qualify last week for the Champions League’s group stage.
And, as indicated to Benfica by Vinicius’ agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents the Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho and right-back Matt Doherty, the Brazilian’s transfer is a ‘very real’ possibility ahead of next month’s transfer deadline, according to O Jogo.
But the newspaper adds it could take offers in excess of €40m (£36.6m) to satisfy the Portuguese giants’ needs.
And it remains to be seen if that sort of figure would tempt Tottenham into a move, with Spurs having recently splashed out for Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.
