Newcastle United have reportedly held discussions to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The USA international spent last season on loan with Bournemouth but is heading back to North London after the Cherries’ semi-final playoff defeat on Saturday.
Carter-Vickers was supposed to be a free agent this summer but Tottenham activated their option of a one-year contract extension [Football London].
But according to SBI, he may not be staying at Spurs for much longer as Newcastle, Bournemouth and Anderlecht hold talks about signing the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window.
The report adds that the Lilywhites will sell for around £10 million.
Newcastle would be a cracking move for Carter-Vickers.
Despite being on Tottenham’s books since 2016, the big centre-back, labelled a ‘beast’ by Jan Vertonghen [ESPN], hasn’t made a Premier League appearance for the club – or any club for that matter.
The Championship is the closest that he’s got to the big time but a switch to St James’s Park would finally come with experience in the top flight.
Spurs definitely need central defenders during the summer but, if we’re honest, Carter-Vickers has no chance of staying with the senior squad next season, regardless of who Daniel Levy appoints as Jose Mourinho’s long-term successor.
