Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke ‘snubbed Wolverhampton Wanderers interest’ to sign new contract at Fratton Park, the Daily Mirror reports [15h February printed edition, page 58].
Clarke extended his Pompey stay until 2020 on Wednesday, having impressed since arriving from Ipswich Town on an initial loan deal two-and-a-half years ago.
The 21-year-old was linked with moves to Reading, Hull City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford this season [Daily Mirror], although Wolves’ interest is new.
Pattern emerging for Wolves?
The runaway Championship leaders – a former club of Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett – have already raided Football League clubs to sign Will Norris and Ben Stevenson his campaign, which makes Clarke a plausible target, especially with Kortney Hause’s Molineux future uncertain.
After confirmation of Clarke’s new deal, Jackett told Portsmouth’s website the Suffolk native is ‘the type of player you can build thinks around’, as he seeks to restore Portsmouth’s Championship status after six seasons in the bottom two divisions.
Clarke made four second tier appearances while still on the books of Ipswich Town.
